<h2>What is Wi-Fi?</h2>

At its core, Wi‑Fi is a short-range wireless networking technology that links devices to a router or access point, enabling them to communicate with one another, access a local network, and reach the internet.

Contrary to popular belief, &ldquo;Wi-Fi&rdquo; doesn&rsquo;t stand for anything. It&rsquo;s a marketing term coined for the Wi-Fi Alliance by its branding firm, Interbrand, in 1999. Wi-Fi became the consumer-friendly term for products based on IEEE 802.11 standards.

A common point of confusion is the difference between Wi-Fi and the internet. They&rsquo;re not the same thing. The internet is the broader network that delivers websites, apps, video calls, and streaming services. Wi-Fi is the local wireless connection that links your devices to that network inside your home.

It also helps to separate signal strength from internet speed. Signal strength&mdash;measured in decibel-milliwatts (dBm)&mdash;indicates the strength of the Wi-Fi signal at your device&rsquo;s location. This affects the quality of its connection to the router.

Internet speed&mdash;measured in bits per second (bps)&mdash;shows how quickly data is delivered by your <a href="http://att.com/">internet service provider (ISP)</a>. You can have a strong Wi-Fi signal and still see slow performance if your home internet plan is limited. Understanding that difference can make it easier to troubleshoot problems. If your signal is strong but your connection still feels slow, the issue may be your internet plan, not your Wi-Fi.

<h2 id="how-does-wi-fi-work">How does Wi-Fi work?</h2>

Wi-Fi works by sending data between your router and your devices through radio waves. It creates a wireless local area network (WLAN) to connect local devices to the internet. Your network has a Service Set Identifier (SSID), which is a network name, and typically has a password that devices use to join your network.

When you open a website, stream a show, or send a message, your device and router exchange data almost instantly.

What is Wi-Fi?

“Internet” and “Wi-Fi” are terms that are often used interchangeably, but is Internet and Wi-Fi the same thing? No, but they do work together to create network connectivity.
Internet—or the <a href="https://www.att.com/internet/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">internet</a>—is how data moves between servers and devices. <a href="https://www.att.com/wi-fi/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Wi-Fi®</a>, on the other hand, is how data travels wirelessly between your router, modem, or gateway and your devices.
There are a lot of variables in each of these technologies, and each is needed for reliable, secure connectivity at home, work, and on the go.
<ul>
<li>The internet is a global network of connected computer networks that communicate with each other.</li>
<li>Wi-Fi is a wireless way for your devices to connect to a local network, and often to the internet.</li>
<li>The internet and Wi-Fi work together to deliver information to your devices.</li>
<li>The type of internet (fiber, <a href="https://www.att.com/internet/internet-air/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">5G home internet</a>, cable, DSL, or satellite), Wi-Fi standard, and capabilities of your connected mobile device determine the quality of your connected experience.</li>

You have options, some of which are determined by what’s available in your area. Before you can choose the internet and Wi-Fi that best align with your needs, it’s good to be clear about what internet and Wi-Fi are, how they work, and why you may choose some options over others.
<h2 id="what-is-internet">What is internet?</h2>
Merriam-Webster defines “internet” (or “the” internet) as an electronic communications network that connects computer networks and organizational computer facilities around the world.¹ Computer networks include servers, routers, personal computers, and other devices.
The internet is how information moves between servers, the cloud (a network of large-scale data centers and the services—computing, storage, and applications—that run in them), and a vast number of device types that rely on the internet to move and share information from it to where data is stored and back.
The world is increasingly connected to the internet. The United Nations reported on November 17, 2025, that “about 6 billion people, or three-quarters of the world’s population, are connected to the Internet in 2025, an increase from 5.8 billion in 2024.”²
Homes, businesses, schools, governments, and individuals or entities that need to move information rapidly often use the internet to do so. When you send text messages, stream movies, or share information at work across the globe, the internet is how this data—including files, media, and other data—is exchanged.
The internet connects to devices in two ways:
<ul>
<li>Physical, wired infrastructure – cables (Ethernet and others) and fiber optics</li>
<li>Wireless radio signals – cellular (including 5G) and Wi-Fi</li>
</ul>
Wi-Fi is how your phone, smart home, and other <a href="https://www.att.com/blog/what-is-wireless-internet" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wireless internet devices</a> connect to the internet.
<h2 id="what-is-wi-fi">What is Wi-Fi?</h2>
Wi-Fi is a wireless technology that connects devices, like phones, laptops, smart TVs, and other equipment to the internet through a nearby Wi-Fi network. The term “Wi-Fi” is a trademarked name created by the Wi-Fi Alliance—a global nonprofit that is the worldwide network of companies that brings you Wi-Fi®.³
Wi-Fi comes from a wireless modem, router, or gateway (modem and router combined), or a separate access point in your home or business. These devices connect to the internet through a wired service (like <a href="https://www.att.com/internet/fiber/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">fiber internet</a> or cable) or a cellular connection (like <a href="https://www.att.com/internet/internet-air/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">5G home internet</a>).
Wi-Fi only works within a certain distance from your modem, router, or gateway. The range can be affected by things like walls and interference from other signals.
The internet and Wi-Fi are two parts of your connectivity that work together.
<h2 id="how-internet-and-wi-fi-work-together">How internet and Wi-Fi work together</h2>
The connection between the internet and Wi-Fi enables you to access data on servers and in the cloud. This connectivity can be provided through either public or private internet and Wi-Fi networks.
Public internet is often delivered over Wi-Fi. It’s what you find in places like cafes, airports, and businesses that provide free internet access. Private internet and Wi-Fi are what you have in your home. Both may require the Wi-Fi network name and password and/or a sign-in page to connect your device to the internet.
There are other ways to access the internet: using an Ethernet cable to connect your device directly to a router, modem, or gateway, or using a <a href="https://www.att.com/buy/connected-devices-and-more/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">mobile hotspot</a>, which uses a cellular connection and shares it over Wi-Fi.
In many of these cases, Wi-Fi enables internet access. Typically, the business, organization, or you in your home has an account with an internet service provider (ISP), like AT&amp;T, that enables access to the internet through wired and wireless connections.
<ul>
<li>The ISP delivers an internet signal to the home or business through an internet connection type.</li>
<li>A Wi-Fi modem and router, or combined gateway connect to that service to create a local network.</li>
<li>It then sends out a Wi-Fi network that your devices join, so they can access the internet through it.</li>
</ul>
Is connecting to the internet the only purpose for Wi-Fi? No. Wi-Fi can also be used to transfer data and files between devices and enable <a href="https://www.att.com/buy/accessories/browse/speakers-smart-home/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">smart home devices</a>.
Not all Wi-Fi and internet are equal, though. The different types of internet connections and standards of Wi-Fi have varied capabilities for quality.
<h2 id="comparing-internet-types-and-wi-fi-standards">Comparing internet types and Wi-Fi standards</h2>
Both internet and Wi-Fi have three critical components that determine quality. These are speed, bandwidth, and latency. For internet, this is determined by the type of internet connectivity—fiber, cable, DSL, satellite, or wireless.
For Wi-Fi, quality is determined by the standard (or version), the equipment, and your mobile device’s compatibility with that standard.

Fiber optic cables are often less affected by weather and less exposed to potential vandalism than other types of internet connectivity. Compared to other options, it’s considered more reliable and future-ready. The latest standards in Wi-Fi handle traffic congestion better than earlier models. They also have more capacity for more devices connecting at the same time.</li>
<li>Security – Fiber is more secure because it transmits data through light pulses and glass strands (called fiber). It’s more difficult to tap into compared to cable and DSL, which are copper-based internet. And because it doesn’t emit electromagnetic interference, it can be harder for hackers to intercept communications. Wi-Fi 6/6E and Wi-Fi 7 typically support WPA3 encryption, which is required for Wi-Fi CERTIFIED 6/6E and 7 programs. With this, you get stronger password protection than older Wi-Fi standards.</li>
</ul>
What’s available to you is largely dependent on where you live. For example, although fiber may be the best option, availability is still growing. Rural areas may not have access to fiber; however, 5G home internet is a great alternative.

Internet vs. Wi-Fi: Are they different?

A recent statistic reveals that 96% of U.S. adults say they use the internet.¹ With this high demand comes the need for quality, and for internet service, speed is a leading factor.
What qualifies as enough speed? That depends on how you plan to use your internet connection. To determine what your speed needs are, it’s good to know that:

<li>For many carriers, speed tiers can range from 100 megabits per second (Mbps) to multi-gig speeds (more than 1 gigabit per second – Gbps)</li>
<li>What’s “enough” depends on your usage, how many devices you’re connecting, and your budget</li>
<li>Speed is just one factor in having a reliable internet connection</li>
</ul>
Compared to older internet connectivity, like DSL, fiber speeds are considered high-speed internet. So, if fiber internet is high-speed, is 500 Mbps fast? Yes, it is, but it’s important to understand why. And when you’re choosing a <a href="https://www.att.com/internet/fiber/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">fiber internet plan</a> for your household, 500 Mbps can likely meet your needs.
As the name suggests, a 500 Mbps plan allows you to transmit 500 megabits of data over your internet connection each second. At 500 Mbps, you can download about 62.5 MB per second in ideal conditions.
For example, a 700 MB album could take around 11 seconds. A 3 GB movie could take around 50 seconds (not counting overhead, such as control signals needed for the transmission).

500 Mbps speed can carry 500 million bits of data per second, which is the same as about 62.5 megabytes per second. Considering that internet speeds can range from 100 Mbps to multi-gig, 500 Mbps may not seem that fast. As with all internet speeds, other factors help create quality connectivity.
Data transfer rate, real-world speed, how many and which types of devices are connected to your internet, and what each user and device is using it for all affect how fast your internet feels. Your equipment also affects speeds, including your internet gateway, which provides <a href="https://www.att.com/wi-fi/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Wi-Fi®</a> to connect devices to your internet wirelessly.
It’s kind of like having a big truck full of cargo and wanting to drive it really fast. The truck’s engine, what the truck is carrying, how many people it’s carrying it for, and the type of road it’s driving on all factor into how fast it can go. WPA3 is the latest Wi‑Fi security standard and the successor to WPA2. It improves how your devices sign in to wireless networks, strengthens encryption, and adds better privacy on open <a href="https://www.att.com/wi-fi/">Wi‑Fi</a>. For you as a home <a href="https://www.att.com/internet/">internet</a> user, that means stronger protection against password-guessing attacks and better safeguards for sensitive traffic.

Many newer routers and devices support WPA3, and many routers also offer WPA3 Transition Mode (sometimes shown as WPA2/WPA3 mixed mode) to help with the upgrade from WPA2. If your equipment is compatible, enabling WPA3 is one of the simplest ways to improve wireless security.

<h2>Introduction to WPA3</h2>

WPA3 stands for Wi‑Fi Protected Access 3. Introduced by the Wi‑Fi Alliance in 2018, it is the latest mainstream standard for securing wireless networks and the successor to WPA2, which served as the default for years. WPA3 is required for devices operating in the 6 GHz band, including Wi‑Fi 6E and <a href="https://www.att.com/blog/what-is-wi-fi-7/">Wi‑Fi 7</a> devices that support 6 GHz, but it&rsquo;s not required for all Wi‑Fi 6 devices.

The Wi‑Fi Alliance introduced WPA3 to address newer security threats and modernize how your wireless devices authenticate and encrypt traffic. In simple terms, WPA3 makes it harder for attackers to guess your password, capture useful login data, or read your traffic on less secure networks.

Wi‑Fi security has evolved over time, from WEP to WPA and then WPA2. WPA3 builds on that progression with stronger cryptography and a newer handshake designed to resist offline password attacks. It also makes open networks, like public Wi‑Fi, more secure by adding protections older setups often lacked.

WPA3 improves your network security without disrupting your everyday internet use. This Wi‑Fi security standard is designed to improve authentication and data protection. The next step is looking at the features that set it apart from older wireless security methods.

<h2 id="key-features-of-wpa3">Key features of WPA3</h2>

WPA3 improves security from the moment your device connects to your network and continues protecting your traffic throughout the session.

<h3>Stronger authentication with SAE</h3>

WPA3-Personal uses Simultaneous Authentication of Equals, or SAE, instead of the four-way handshake used by WPA2-Personal. SAE is designed to resist offline dictionary attacks, where someone captures login data and then tries large numbers of password guesses without interacting with your network again.

That change makes WPA3 more resilient against one of the best-known weaknesses in WPA2 home Wi‑Fi security.

<h3>Better protection from weak passwords</h3>

Weak passwords are still a risk, but WPA3 reduces how useful they are to attackers. Because SAE requires live interaction for each password guess, it&rsquo;s much harder for someone to test huge numbers of guesses offline after capturing a handshake.

That doesn&rsquo;t make a weak password safe, but it does make brute-force attacks less practical than they were under WPA2.

<h3>Encryption on open networks</h3>

WPA3 supports Enhanced Open, which is based on Opportunistic Wireless Encryption, or OWE. This can encrypt traffic between your device and the access point on an open network, even when no password is required.

That&rsquo;s especially useful in places on open Wi‑Fi, which is Wi-Fi that doesn&rsquo;t require a password, encryption, or authentication to join, like airports, hotels, and cafes. Open Wi-Fi has traditionally made it easier for others nearby to snoop on your traffic.

<h3>Optional stronger enterprise security</h3>

WPA3-Enterprise includes an optional 192-bit security mode for organizations that need higher-assurance protections. That matters more in business and government settings than in most homes, but it&rsquo;s part of the WPA3 standard.

For you as a consumer, the biggest benefits of WPA3 are stronger sign-ins, better resistance to password attacks, and added privacy on open Wi‑Fi.

<h2 id="wpa3-vs-wpa2-whats-different">WPA3 vs. WPA2: what&rsquo;s different?</h2>

WPA2 and WPA3 both protect wireless networks, but WPA3 changes how your devices authenticate and how some of your traffic is protected.

Under WPA2-Personal, your devices connect using a pre-shared password and a four-way handshake. If an attacker captures that handshake, they may be able to try password guesses offline. WPA3-Personal replaces that process with SAE, which blocks that type of offline guessing and improves session protection.

WPA3 also improves privacy on open networks. With older open Wi‑Fi setups, your traffic often wasn&rsquo;t encrypted by default. WPA3 can support encrypted device-to-access-point traffic on open networks through OWE, helping reduce passive eavesdropping.

For your home, the switch doesn&rsquo;t have to happen all at once. Many routers support WPA3 Transition Mode, which lets newer devices use WPA3 while older ones continue connecting with WPA2.

However, it can create interoperability issues with older or legacy devices, including some smart home products, printers, and older phones or laptops. WPA3 Transition Mode can sometimes cause compatibility problems similar to full WPA3, depending on the device and software version.

To help reduce those issues, the Wi‑Fi Alliance introduced WPA3 Personal Compatibility mode in 2024. Support for that feature depends on the router and device maker, so check your equipment documentation if you run into connection problems.

In practical terms, WPA3 offers you better protection against common password attacks and stronger privacy features for newer hardware. Another key advantage is forward secrecy, which can help protect your past sessions even if someone gets your password later.

<h3>Forward secrecy and why it matters</h3>

Forward secrecy means your older network traffic is harder to decrypt later, even if a long-term password is exposed in the future.

In WPA3-Personal, SAE supports forward secrecy by using an ephemeral key exchange during authentication. That means previously captured traffic isn&rsquo;t automatically exposed just because someone later learns your Wi‑Fi password.

For you at home, that matters most when you use Wi‑Fi for sensitive activity, such as online banking, telehealth visits, work sessions, or account sign-ins. It adds another layer of protection against attackers who collect encrypted traffic and try to unlock it later.

Forward secrecy is one of WPA3&rsquo;s clearest technical improvements over WPA2, especially if you want stronger long-term privacy. To use it, though, you need a router and devices that actually support WPA3.

<h3>Adoption, device support, and compatibility</h3>

Many routers, <a href="https://www.att.com/buy/phones/">phones</a>, laptops, and <a href="https://www.att.com/buy/tablets/">tablets</a> released in recent years support WPA3, especially models tied to Wi‑Fi 6 and newer platforms. In some cases, support arrived through firmware or software updates rather than brand-new hardware.

To check whether your equipment supports WPA3, start with your router&rsquo;s admin settings or product page. Look for options such as WPA3-Personal, WPA3-Enterprise, WPA3 Transition Mode, WPA2/WPA3 mixed mode, or WPA3 Personal Compatibility mode.

On phones, tablets and computers, check Wi‑Fi settings, operating system documentation, or the manufacturer&rsquo;s support pages.

If some of your devices still use WPA2, WPA3 Transition Mode is usually the easiest way to begin. But some older devices may still have trouble connecting or staying connected.

It lets compatible devices use WPA3 while older devices continue to connect. If you have older smart home or Internet of Things (IoT) gear, you may need to keep it on a separate guest network or replace it over time.

For most households, the upgrade process is simple:

WPA3 support is now common on newer equipment, and WPA3 Transitional Mode can make the upgrade easier if you still have older devices at home. Even so, WPA3 isn&rsquo;t a complete security solution, so it&rsquo;s worth understanding its limits and the setup choices that still matter.

WPA3 is stronger than WPA2, but it&rsquo;s not flawless. Early research identified weaknesses in some WPA3 implementations, particularly around SAE and downgrade scenarios. Vendors later issued patches and updates, which is one reason you should keep your router firmware and device software current.

There are also practical limits to keep in mind. WPA3 Transition Mode can create interoperability problems with some legacy clients, sometimes more often than people expect. Some older smart home and IoT devices still don&rsquo;t support WPA3. And while OWE can encrypt traffic on open networks, it doesn&rsquo;t verify that the network itself is legitimate, so fake hotspots remain a risk.

For most home users, the best practices are simple:

	<li>Review your connected device list regularly and remove anything unfamiliar.</li>
