In-store holiday shopping tips

The thought of going into a physical store over the holidays can be enough to stress you out, but it doesn’t have to be. In fact, you can find some of the best deals in-store, and you can make them even better with these hacks.

Store apps

Many stores have smartphone apps that can offer some significant benefits that aren’t widely advertised. These perks include cashback programs, coupons, and sale notifications. The catch is that, in many cases, you can only use these advantages in-store. It’s a way to draw customers in, and if you’re planning to do some of your shopping in person this holiday season, you should check around and see what perks the stores near you offer via their apps.

Also, look out for store loyalty programs and apps which can offer you freebies, sales and benefits just for being a customer.

Check a store’s online prices before buying

This tip might seem a bit odd. After all, wouldn’t a store’s in-store and online selections be the same price? Nope. Often companies have online sales and special pricing for online shopping.

When making a major gift purchase this holiday season, check both the retail and online stores to find the best price, especially if you’re budgeting for the holiday season. Also, if you’re traveling for a family gathering, you may want to have your gift delivered, especially if shipping is free.

Online holiday shopping tips

If you’re shopping online, getting the item to your door may take less energy. However, finding and purchasing it can be a nightmare. There are thousands of online retailers and figuring out how to get what you want at the lowest price is a challenging prospect. Shopping with these hacks in mind will make things a lot easier and help knock some cash off those gifts.

Check price history sites

There are services available that track the prices of online items over time. By checking these price history sites, you can see when you’re actually getting a deal and when you’re not. Most of them also have the option for you to set up alerts for when an item hits an all-time low price, which is extremely helpful.

Make a separate email account just for holiday shopping

Many sites offer coupons, exclusive deals, and other perks for signing up to their websites or newsletters. The catch is that you then get thousands of emails you don’t necessarily want. If you make a separate email just for holiday shopping, you can get these special offers without having to spend an hour unsubscribing to everything they send.

Having a separate email also centralizes all your receipts and shipping info. This tactic makes it easier to keep organized, especially if you’re ordering from multiple retailers.

Spend a bit more to get free shipping

Many sites offer free shipping if your purchase is over a certain amount. Sometimes it’s worth it to hit that amount, and sometimes it’s not depending on the shipping costs.

Before you commit to buying, go to your cart and check out your shipping costs. Say you’re buying an item that’s $34, and you need $35 for free shipping. It’s almost always going to be more cost-effective to buy a cheap thing to get over $35. Some sites will even let you search by price, so consider searching for “items under $2,” or whatever amount you need to qualify for free shipping.

Holiday gift guides

Online holiday gift guides can be a good way to find holiday tech gifts and other specialties. These guides often provide insight into what’s trending among hobby enthusiasts and for different relationship types. Even if you don’t find exactly which present you want, a good guide might give spark ideas for the perfect gift.

Use recommended product lists

Many online retailers have a helpful section on product pages that lists things like:

People who bought this product bought…

If you like this item, you’ll like…

These lists can help you connect the dots to find a great gift, even if you’re not going to buy from that particular website. Just find the product page for something you know someone likes and check out what is recommended. These features are meant to hook people who love the item on the product page. As such, they should point you in the right direction.

Pay attention to what people say

When it gets close to the holiday season, people are going to start to drop hints about what they want. Sometimes finding the best gift is as simple as listening. If someone close to you says they’re interested in something or they need something, jot down a note on your phone.

Holiday shopping FAQs

When should I start holiday shopping?

Start looking for deals in early October. For tech deals, like electronics and new smartphones, keep an eye out for new device launches, which may offer great deals.

When is the peak rush for holiday shopping?

The Saturday before Christmas is the busiest day for in-store shopping.

How long before Christmas can I ship an item?

Many online retailers stop offering delivery-before-Christmas guarantees between Dec. 20 and Dec. 23. If you need to wait to make your purchase, check well in advance to know when a retailer stops shipping for Christmas.

If you’re shipping through USPS or another shipping service, check for cut off times to where you’re shipping to.

What’s the return policy window for most purchases?

It depends on the retailer and, for some items, on the type of purchase and whether it was purchased on sale or clearance. Clearance items often cannot be returned.

The peak return period is the day after Christmas through January 2. And some retailers may require a restocking fee for certain items, so review return policies before you buy.

What changes day to day when your phone folds

iPhone Duo durability, the hinge, and the crease

Why iPhone Duo may be an ideal phone for you

Noe Ramirez is a Lead Product Marketing professional at AT&T and also serves as the Apple Editor for TechBuzz by AT&T.

Apple’s iPhone Duo pairs a 5.4-inch cover screen with a 7.6-inch folding display, giving buyers a compact phone that opens into a small tablet. The larger screen creates more room for reading, watching videos, drawing, and working in two apps, but the design adds weight, hinge care, and cost.

The key question is whether an Apple foldable iPhone is right for you. Frequent multitaskers may benefit most, while buyers who favor a light phone and one-handed use face the clearest compromises in daily use and ownership.

The 5.4-inch cover display supports everyday tasks without opening the phone.

The 7.6-inch inner display expands the workspace for apps, video, documents, and drawing.

The 8.96-ounce body adds noticeable weight, while the hinge and folding screen require additional care.

Touch ID replaces Face ID, and eSIM technology replaces the physical SIM card.

iPhone Duo is best suited to buyers who will use its inner display often enough to justify the phone’s folding design. Its book-style design may provide meaningful value for people seeking a phone and small tablet in one device.

What a foldable iPhone actually is

Foldable phones generally take one of two forms: a book-style model opens along a vertical hinge to reveal a larger display, while a clamshell model folds into a shorter shape.

iPhone Duo uses the book-style design. Its 5.4-inch outer screen works like a compact smartphone display, while the device opens to a 7.6-inch inner screen. Both displays share an aspect ratio, so apps can retain similar proportions as you move between them.1

Which technical terms should buyers know?

To better understand how a foldable phone works, what to expect, and how to care for it to make your phone last, learn these terms:

Hinge cycle rating measures the number of folds completed during laboratory testing.

Nano-texture finish reduces reflected glare.

Cover display means the outer screen used while the phone is closed.

Letterboxing adds black bars above and below video content when aspect ratios differ.

eSIM transfer moves cellular service digitally.

These terms help explain iPhone Duo’s folding display, everyday use, and connectivity. You can see how those features come together in iPhone Duo’s specifications.

iPhone Duo may be an ideal fit for Apple users who want more screen space, and its key features make it feel like a pocket-size tablet.

Key features of iPhone Duo

iPhone Duo combines familiar iPhone hardware with features designed for a folding screen. The main changes involve app layouts, controls along the screen edges, multitasking, and stylus support.

With iOS 27, when iPhone Duo is open, the Dynamic Island runs along the side of the display, while the Dock, Lock Screen buttons, and app controls sit closer to the edges. This keeps the center clear for content. When opened, iPhone Duo shows two Home Screen pages side by side rather than stretching one page across the larger screen.

StandBy can turn on the outer or inner display when you set iPhone Duo down, even when it isn’t charging. In this position, the device can display a clock, calendar, photos, or other useful information.

During demanding activities, the A20 Pro chip and vapor chamber work together to manage performance and heat.

iPhone Duo camera

The rear camera system includes a 48-megapixel main camera and a 48-megapixel ultra-wide camera. The main camera provides a 2x view by cropping the full-resolution image.

While iPhone Duo doesn’t have a separate telephoto lens, the folding design offers more ways to position the camera. You can place the partly folded phone on a surface for group photos, video calls, or long exposures. The cover screen can also show a preview to the person in front of the camera.

Together, these features adapt the familiar iPhone experience to a larger, foldable screen. With its tablet-like design, you can see how iPhone Duo’s design may change everyday tasks.

What changes day to day when your phone folds

Multitasking provides the folding screen’s main practical benefit. The custom version of iOS 27 can place two apps side by side through Split View. Saved app pairs reopen common combinations without requiring you to arrange them each time.

You could keep a calendar beside email, compare a map with travel details, or take notes while reading. Video can remain visible beside messages or a webpage, though its proportions may leave unused screen space.

What do people use a foldable phone for?

iPhone Duo delivers a larger mobile workspace. The inner display provides room for reading documents, viewing maps, editing photos, sketching, and running two apps together.

The 5.4-inch cover display is relatively narrow, making the phone compact when closed. The folded device remains thicker and heavier than a conventional handset, but its narrow cover screen may make it easier to hold.

How does multitasking work on the inner screen?

Split View divides the 7.6-inch canvas between supported apps. Saved app pairs act as shortcuts for combinations you regularly use.

App behavior still depends on the developer. Some programs may expand across the full display, while others may retain a phone-shaped window. Video may show black bars, known as aspect ratio letterboxing, or require cropping to fill the screen.

A larger display creates more room, but each app determines how effectively it uses that space. Checking your most-used apps before purchase can prevent any surprises.

Can you use the cover screen one-handed?

The cover display handles calls, messages, directions, music controls, and short tasks without opening the device. A narrow display can improve thumb reach. Long messages, document editing, and extended video viewing favor the inner screen.
iPhone Duo works as a compact phone for quick interactions and a two-handed device for longer sessions. Because of the phone’s size, consider its weight and feel as well.

iPhone Duo weight and pocket feel

iPhone Duo weighs 8.96 ounces and measures 0.44 inches thick when closed. It becomes 5.2 millimeters thick when unfolded, but your pocket carries its closed dimensions.

When folded, iPhone Duo has two display sections, the hinge, and the structure needed to protect a flexible inner panel. Because of its weight and folded thickness, you may find that it fits more comfortably in a bag or jacket pocket than in the pockets of light pants or exercise clothing.

iPhone Duo’s folding design adds weight and thickness that may affect how comfortably it travels. That same construction also shapes the durability of the hinge, flexible display, and crease along the inner screen.

iPhone Duo durability, the hinge, and the crease

iPhone Duo uses a Grade 5 titanium frame and hinge cover. Ceramic Shield protects its exterior surfaces, and an IP68 rating indicates resistance to dust and temporary water immersion under controlled laboratory conditions.1

What is the crease and why does it exist?

A foldable phone crease forms where the flexible display curves around the hinge. Multiple screen layers must bend repeatedly without separating.

iPhone Duo uses a specialized display stack and hinge system intended to reduce crease visibility. Its nano-texture finish controls reflections that could draw attention to the fold.

A foldable phone crease may remain visible under direct light or from certain angles. You may also feel it while moving a finger or Apple Pencil across the center.

Cases and screen protection

A folding phone needs a case that leaves the hinge free to move. Some cases cover the exterior panels, while others add protection over the hinge.

The inner display can’t use a standard tempered-glass protector because its surface must bend. An incompatible layer may interfere with folding. You should leave a factory-applied inner film in place and use only approved replacements.

Repair costs, hinge coverage, and accidental-damage terms deserve attention before purchase. AT&T device protection offers options for eligible devices, subject to enrollment periods, fees, and plan terms.

Premium materials add protection, but the moving hinge and flexible panel still require more care than a standard phone. If you purchase iPhone Duo, follow Apple’s care instructions to protect the hinge and inner display.

Beyond durability and care, battery life and connectivity also shape how iPhone Duo performs throughout the day.

iPhone Duo battery and connectivity

Apple rates iPhone Duo for up to 44 hours of video playback on the outer display and up to 31 hours on the inner display.¹ The outer display uses less power, while the larger inner display requires more energy to provide additional space for apps and multitasking.

Actual battery life varies with brightness, signal strength, screen use, and demanding activities such as gaming, navigation, and multitasking.

Setting up an eSIM-only phone

iPhone Duo uses eSIM technology and doesn’t include a physical SIM tray. Instead of moving a plastic SIM card from one phone to another, you activate or transfer cellular service digitally.

Dual eSIM support allows two eligible phone lines to remain active on the same device. This can be useful for keeping personal and work numbers separate or adding a local plan while traveling.

You can label each line, choose which one handles calls and messages, and designate a default line for cellular data. Availability varies by carrier, plan, and destination, and only one line can use cellular data at a time.

Network and Wi-Fi support

iPhone Duo supports 5G, including the n77 and n260 frequency bands, which are used for AT&T 5G+. The n77 band balances faster speeds with broader coverage, while n260 can provide much faster service over shorter distances, typically in select high-traffic locations.

For wireless internet, the device supports Wi-Fi 7, a newer Wi-Fi standard designed to improve speed, network capacity, and responsiveness when used with a compatible router.

It also features 2x2 MIMO, which uses two built-in antenna paths to exchange multiple streams of data with compatible network equipment. This can support faster, more reliable connections. Actual performance depends on network availability, equipment, internet service, traffic, and location.

iPhone Duo combines all-day battery potential with flexible dual eSIM service and modern 5G and Wi-Fi 7 connectivity. Battery life and network performance will vary based on how and where you use the device, especially when using the larger inner display or demanding apps.

Consider all these factors to determine whether iPhone Duo fits your needs.

Why iPhone Duo may be an ideal phone for you

iPhone Duo may suit people who read long documents, multitask, travel frequently, watch video, or use a stylus. It can consolidate those roles without leaving Apple’s software ecosystem.

International Data Corporation projects that foldable phones will remain a niche category by shipment volume. It also expects the average selling price of a foldable phone to be roughly three times the average price of a conventional smartphone in 2026.2 Purchase price, accessories, coverage, and potential repairs belong in your cost estimate.

iPhone Duo’s appeal goes beyond the novelty of a folding phone. Its value comes from opening the device throughout the day to gain more room for multitasking, reading, watching videos, or using a stylus. People who regularly take advantage of the inner display will get the most from the design.

Foldable iPhone Duo FAQs

Does iPhone Duo support Apple Pencil?

Yes. It supports the USB-C Apple Pencil, sold separately. Available tools vary by app. Because the phone doesn’t have a built-in Apple Pencil storage slot, you’ll need to carry and charge the accessory separately.

Is there a physical SIM slot for iPhone Duo?

No. The phone uses eSIM and supports two active digital lines.

Why is there no Face ID on iPhone Duo?

iPhone Duo uses Touch ID in the side button instead of Face ID. Apple hasn’t published a full explanation.

Does iPhone Duo have a telephoto lens?

No. It has main and ultra-wide cameras. The main sensor provides 2x optical-quality zoom.

Where did the Action button and Camera Control go on iPhone Duo?

iPhone Duo doesn’t include an Action button or Camera Control. Confirm the final button layout on Apple’s product page.

What are “Smart Take” and “Kid Cue” on iPhone Duo?

These AI-powered features make taking pictures more convenient. Smart Take automatically captures photos when everyone is ready, while Kid Cue draws a child’s attention toward the lens for a clearer shot.

Why the iPhone Duo stands out

iPhone Duo stands out because Apple tackles many of the problems that still affect foldable phones. Its matte nano-texture finish reduces glare, while sliding display layers make the crease less noticeable. The under-display camera keeps the screen clear when it’s not in use.

Apple also adds IP68 protection, a titanium body, and Ceramic Shield 2 for better durability. Split-screen apps, Apple Pencil support, and up to 2TB of storage make the larger display more useful. The result is a foldable phone that addresses durability concerns, screen glare, and app use on a larger display.

Is a foldable iPhone right for you?

Start saving for your holiday gifts early

Consider creative and cost-effective options for holiday giving

To make sure your loved ones all have the perfect gift, you might make a list and check it twice. You can do the same with your spending by budgeting for the holidays. With a thoughtful strategy in place for both the people on your list and your bank account, it’s easier to manage your spending.

Consumers budgeted an average of $890 to spend on gifts and other seasonal products during the 2025 holiday season, according to the National Retail Federation.¹

Be honest with yourself about how much you normally spend during the holidays and whether that trend is reasonable for this year.

Plan for what you’ll buy and stick to it. If you snag a great deal, adjust your budget so you’re not going over your planned spending limit.

Save for the holidays throughout the year instead of trying to make all your purchases at once.

Plan ahead for how much you want to spend and take advantage of Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals.

No matter what you’re able to set aside for holiday shopping, you can lower your stress, avoid taking on unexpected expenses, and focus on enjoying the festivities with a practical holiday budget in place.

When you create a game plan for your holiday shopping, you can check items off your list without unnecessary financial stress.

Review past holiday spending

Every budget needs a baseline. Start by determining how much you spent last year. If you feel like you spent too much last year on gifts, events, travel, or other holiday expenses, look for areas to cut back. If you’re satisfied with your past spending, then set that as your baseline and stick to it this year.

Either way, review your past holiday spending using your bank accounts, credit cards, or budgeting apps to help guide your planning. Select last year’s holiday season as the date range, then isolate how much you spent on holiday-related purchases. Pay attention to categories like gifts, food, decorations, travel, and entertainment.

While most financial apps can automatically categorize purchases, you may find it helpful to download an additional budgeting app to your smartphone if you’re not already using one. No matter how you review your past spending, it’s the first step in making an effective and detailed holiday spending plan.

Once you understand last year’s expenses, it’s time to focus on this year. As early as possible, create a plan for the holidays. The sooner you make a forward-looking budget, the sooner you can get excited about your plans without added stress about spending.

You can follow a step-by-step approach to making a holiday spending plan:

1. List and categorize all potential holiday expenses. Start by making a list of everything you might buy during the holidays.

Gifts. First, decide who you want to buy gifts for and what you may want to give them. Don’t forget co-workers, Secret Santa, and any last-minute gifts.

Wrapping supplies. Paper, boxes, bows, labels, tape, and so on. Pro tip: Stock up early because the good paper tends to sell out fast during sales.

Decorations. Do you need a new tree or ornaments? If you’re going to jazz up your home for guests, plan ahead instead of buying decorations on the go, as those costs can really add up.

Shipping. Shipping costs have gone up. Note the cost of your preferred shipping method and plan to ship early to avoid higher shipping rates.

Travel. Holiday travel often has blackout days for deals. To save money while traveling, consider all of your options and costs.

Entertainment. Include food for hosting meals and holiday parties, tickets to special holiday events, and any accessories—like a new outfit—in your budget.

2. Set yourself up for deals. Brands usually start promoting holiday deals early, especially for those shopping online. Sign up for newsletters and alerts so you know what the deals will be and when they’ll be active. If you’re eyeing concert tickets, join the artist’s fan club for presales and discounts. And to make sure you don’t miss out, set a reminder on your smartphone to alert you before the sale goes live.

If you want new tech, pay special attention. Tech—smartphones, accessories, and TVs—is often one of the hottest gifts during the holidays. Pay attention to brands that are loyal to you.

3. Set spending limits. Even if you’re scoring deals, you can easily overspend if you don’t stick to your plan. Prioritize what’s most important to you. With an understanding of your potential costs, you can set a “mini-budget” for each category.

For example, you might earmark $1,000 for gifts and another $250 for entertainment. Be optimistic yet realistic about your spending limits. Use last year’s numbers as a guide, then tack on a little more for flexibility and inflation. Try an inflation calculator to help with the math.

Having a detailed plan helps you think more critically about each purchase and makes coordinating your finances easier.

Creating the holiday budget is the easy part. But staying within it? That’s where the challenge begins, but you can set yourself up for holiday success in several ways.

Spread out your gift purchasing

Waiting for Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals can save you a lot, but there’s no guarantee your must-have gifts will be on sale—or even in stock. Instead, buy your gifts at different times. Spread out your non-electronic purchases throughout the year, and save big on Cyber Monday and Black Friday for electronics. Buying one or two gifts each month makes holiday expenses more manageable, especially if you’re buying a lot of gifts for tech fans.

Being flexible with your gift shopping can also save you money. For example, if you’re wondering how to give a phone as a gift without overspending, search for deals early. Once new smartphones are released, you might find discounts on older models and other offers.

If you buy gifts early, the only downside is that you have less time to save for them. That’s why having a holiday savings plan is just as vital as having a holiday spending plan.

Start saving for your holiday gifts early

Instead of waiting until summer or fall, why not start saving for the holidays at the beginning of the year? Setting aside a little extra cash each month can make the end of the year much easier on your wallet. And saving early doesn’t mean spending less on your loved ones—it just means being prepared.

Because saving money is often easier said than done, start implementing a few holiday budgeting tips as soon as possible. For example, cut back on non-essentials. Whenever you’re tempted to splurge, put that same amount into your holiday savings instead. Also, consider setting up automated transfers into your holiday savings each pay period. Even $50 per paycheck can add up quickly and set you up for financial success this season. You can also talk to a financial consultant about setting up a holiday fund that can earn interest.

Whichever savings advice speaks to you, start small. Save a little each month, and by the holidays, you’ll have more wiggle room in your budget. Saving consistently can also help you stay disciplined.

Consider creative and cost-effective options for holiday giving

If you find that your budget is tight, you can still give thoughtful gifts—it just takes a little creativity. And remember, you don’t have to spend the same amount on everyone. While you may want to give your children the gift they’ve been hoping for all year, consider making ornaments or baked goods for others as gifts. Did you take a trip with someone and snap some great photos with your phone? Print them out and give an inexpensive photo album as a gift.

There are endless ways to turn your passions into gifts you won’t find in any holiday gift guide. And activities like White Elephant or Secret Santa are just as fun as individual gift-giving. Plus, they let you spend less because there’s usually a low spending limit and you only have to buy one gift for the group. And don’t forget about regifting! What you don’t love, someone else might.

By pairing these cost-effective holiday gift ideas with other money-saving tips, you can meet your holiday budgeting goals. Budgeting may not be the most exciting part of the holidays, but think of it as an investment in your holiday cheer.

Also, existing AT&T customers get the same great deals as new customers. The holidays are a great time to take advantage of tech deals and save money through the AT&T app, our deals online, or at your local AT&T store.

What is fiber internet? It’s broadband service that sends data as pulses of light through thin glass or, less commonly, plastic strands. Full-fiber service can deliver similar upload and download speeds with low latency, while hybrid networks use copper for the final connection to the property. That difference can shape speed, reliability, and installation.

For consumers, three questions matter most: Does fiber reach your address? What performance does the plan provide? How do its price and terms compare with the internet service you have now?

Fiber carries data through optical strands instead of copper wires.

Full-fiber service extends the optical connection all the way to your home.

Symmetrical plans offer similar upload and download speeds.

Local availability remains a major barrier for many shoppers.

Fiber can give you faster uploads, lower latency, and steady performance during heavy use. Yet “fiber” doesn’t always mean the optical line reaches your home. Service can also differ by address. The connection type, available speeds, and total monthly cost will help you judge its value.

What is fiber internet?

Fiber optic internet transmits data as pulses of light through thin glass or plastic strands. To answer the question, “What is fiber optic internet?” think of it as a broadband connection that transmits data using light instead of electrical signals. It uses fiber for most or all of its path through the provider’s network. Those light signals carry the videos, messages, webpages, games, and files you send and receive.

Cable internet usually relies on coaxial copper cable to reach your home, while digital subscriber line (DSL) service uses copper telephone lines. Fiber-optic lines can carry large amounts of data over long distances without the electrical interference that can affect copper wires.

What is fiber internet compared with regular internet? It isn’t a separate type of online service but one way to connect your home to the wider internet. Cable, DSL, fixed wireless, and satellite use different routes.

The term “fiber internet” can be less clear when an internet provider uses optical lines for only part of the network. The point where the fiber ends can affect the speed and service you receive.

Fiber to the home vs. fiber to the node

Fiber to the home (FTTH), also called fiber to the premises (FTTP), extends the optical line to your residence. Your data stays on fiber until the connection reaches an ONT at or inside your property.

Fiber to the node (FTTN) ends the optical line at shared equipment in your neighborhood. Copper wiring covers the remaining distance to your residence.

That last part of the line can affect service. Copper connections generally have less capacity, and their performance is more sensitive to distance and electrical interference. Full-fiber plans are also more likely to offer symmetrical speeds, meaning you get similar rates for uploads and downloads.

Check the plan details to identify the connection type. If they don’t specify where the fiber ends, ask the provider. The network available at your address determines which connection type you can order.

[Read: Can you get internet without cable?]

Is fiber internet available in my area?

Fiber availability can vary by city, neighborhood, street, and building. A provider may serve one part of your community while it builds the network in another. If you live in an apartment, the building may need new wiring, and the provider may need approval from the property owner or manager.

Coverage maps are a useful place to start. However, they don’t always confirm service at a single property. Enter your full street address and unit number on the provider’s website for a more exact result. A fiber line running past a home doesn’t necessarily mean service is ready for activation at that address.

Fiber internet vs. cable and DSL

What is the difference between fiber and cable internet? The main differences are how they carry data and how much upload capacity they tend to offer. DSL uses a third method and has its own speed and distance limits.

Cable can provide fast downloads, but its upload speeds are often slower. You may also share part of the local cable network with nearby customers. As a result, your service may change when more people in your area go online.

DSL uses existing telephone lines. Your speed may decrease as the distance over copper between your home and the provider’s equipment increases.

Fiber often has more capacity than copper-based connections. Still, your results will depend on your plan and the provider’s network. Your router and connected devices can also affect performance.

This section provides a high-level summary. For a closer look at speed, reliability, and network design, see Fiber vs. cable.

Speed and symmetry

Understanding download speed vs. upload speed helps explain a key benefit of fiber: A symmetrical plan provides matching or closely matched speeds in both directions.

Download speed controls how fast information reaches you. It affects streaming, file downloads, and webpage loading. Upload speed controls how fast information leaves your connection. It matters for video conferencing, cloud backups, security cameras, and large file transfers.

Many cable and DSL plans give more capacity to downloads than uploads. That can cause a problem when you’re sending data while other people in your home are online.

Latency is another factor to consider. Round-trip latency measures how long data takes to reach its destination and return, usually in milliseconds. Lower latency can make video calls and online games feel more responsive. Your device, Wi-Fi® conditions, and the location of the server can also affect the result.

Is fiber internet better than cable and DSL? Fiber often gives you a more balanced connection if you send large files or use several online services at once. Consider price, availability, and your household’s needs when deciding whether fiber is the best choice.

[Read: Mbps vs Gbps: Understanding the differences]

Key benefits of fiber internet

The benefits of fiber internet go beyond the highest speed shown for a plan. A fiber plan with enough bandwidth can support several people streaming, working, gaming, or sharing files at once. You can work while someone else streams, plays a game, or shares files.

Fast uploads can shorten cloud backups and file transfers. Low latency can make calls and online games more responsive. Providers can also increase the network’s capacity by upgrading equipment. They may not have to replace every optical line to support faster service.

Reliability during high-traffic hours

Cable customers in the same area may share local network capacity. Heavy use can reduce performance when a shared part of the network nears its limit. Newer cable technology may lessen that effect, but your experience will depend on local conditions.

Fiber networks also share capacity and can become congested, but they generally have more capacity to manage heavy demand. That may help your service stay more consistent during busy hours.

Fiber isn’t immune to outages. Damaged cables, equipment failures, construction, power outages, and severe weather can interrupt your connection. No home internet service can remove every risk.

Where fiber falls short

Limited availability is a major drawback of fiber. Building a network requires permits, workers, equipment, and access to property. Coverage can therefore differ between homes on the same street.

Installation may take longer if a technician needs to add a line or new equipment. If you rent or live in an apartment, you may need approval from the owner or building manager.

Costs can also vary. Some providers include equipment or installation, while others charge separate equipment or installation fees. Promotional prices may expire. Use the standard monthly price after any promotion ends when making a long-term comparison.

Fiber has clear technical strengths. Its value to your household depends on availability, installation requirements, and total cost.

Is fiber internet worth switching to?

Fiber is worth considering if you need fast uploads, low latency, or enough capacity for many devices and simultaneous activities. If you mostly browse websites and stream video, a stable cable plan may already meet your needs.

Start by reviewing your current service, including the monthly price and the speeds you normally receive. Check your typical upload and download speeds, equipment charges, latency, and recent reliability. Then compare those details with the fiber plan at your address.

Providers’ broadband labels can also help you compare your choices. These labels show the monthly price, introductory-rate details, additional fees, data allowances, typical speeds, and latency in a standard format.

Your equipment matters, too. An older router or a crowded Wi-Fi channel can reduce performance in your home. A phone or computer with older network hardware may also run at a lower speed. A fast fiber line, however, can’t remove every home network limit.

How does fiber internet actually work?

How does fiber internet work once the line reaches your property? The provider turns digital information into pulses of light. It then sends those pulses through optical cables toward your home.

With a full-fiber connection, the line reaches an optical network terminal (ONT) at your property. The ONT converts optical signals into electrical signals that your home-network equipment can use. Your router connects your devices to the service through Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

Your Wi-Fi network is separate from the fiber line. Walls, distance, interference, and router placement can reduce wireless performance inside your home. Ethernet gives you a direct wired connection when you need steadier performance.

What installation typically involves

Installation depends on the connections already at your property. A technician may need to run a line from a nearby terminal and choose an entry point. The technician will then activate the ONT, connect your router, and test the service.

The line may come from a utility pole or an underground terminal. Buried utilities, access to your property, and apartment rules may affect the schedule. If new fiber equipment or wiring is required, a technician typically handles the installation.

Once the ONT is active, your router connects your devices to the service through Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

Fiber can support fast, symmetrical service with low latency. However, availability, price, and installation needs will shape its value for you. Comparing the plans at your address is the clearest way to decide if switching makes sense.

Fiber internet FAQs

How is fiber installed?

A technician runs a fiber line to your home and connects it to an optical network terminal (ONT). The technician then connects your router, activates the service, and tests the connection.

Is fiber internet reliable?

Yes. Fiber is generally reliable because it can handle high data demand, and the optical line isn’t affected by electrical interference. However, damaged lines, equipment failures, and power outages can still disrupt service.

What are the advantages of fiber over traditional cable internet?

Fiber often provides faster uploads, symmetrical speeds, lower latency, and steadier performance during busy hours. Cable may be more widely available and may cost less, depending on your address.

Will fiber make my TV and streaming faster?

Fiber can improve streaming if your current connection is slow or crowded. It may reduce buffering and support more streams at once, but your plan, Wi-Fi signal, streaming service, and TV also affect performance.

What’s a good fiber internet speed for a family of four?

A plan with 300 to 500 megabits per second (Mbps) may be enough for many families that stream, work, study, and play games online. You may want a faster plan if several people often upload large files or stream high-resolution video at once.

What’s the difference between fiber internet and 5G home internet?

Fiber sends data through a wired optical line, while 5G home internet uses a wireless cellular network. Fiber often provides more consistent speeds and faster uploads. However, 5G home internet may be easier to install and can be useful where fiber isn’t available.

Fiber internet offers fast uploads, low latency, and consistent service across multiple devices. Your decision will depend on availability, household use, plan terms, and total monthly cost. Compare those details so you can choose a plan that meets your needs.

What is fiber internet?

Why internet speed matters for video conferencing

Recommended bandwidth by call type and participant count

Home network setup for reliable video calls

For reliable one-on-one high-definition (HD) video calls, a practical internet speed for video conferencing is 5 to 8 megabits per second (Mbps) for both upload and download speed. Group meetings, screen sharing, and multiple devices may require more bandwidth to maintain clear audio and video.

Advertised speed is only one part of call quality. Upload and download speeds, latency, connection stability, and other internet activity in your home are also important. Wi-Fi® interference, router placement, gaming, streaming, and cloud backups can reduce available bandwidth.

Key performance factors include:

Your upload speed, which affects how clearly other participants see and hear you

Your download speed, which affects the video, audio, and shared content you receive

Your latency, jitter, and packet loss, which influence real-time performance

Your household activity, such as streaming, gaming, and cloud backups

Your home-network conditions, including router placement and Wi-Fi interference

Together, these factors affect video call quality, while bandwidth needs vary by call type and number of participants.

Recommended bandwidth by call type and participant count

The recommended internet speed for video conferencing varies by call type and participant count. Higher video resolutions, more video feeds, and screen sharing generally require more bandwidth.

Broadband speed and connection quality

High-speed internet can help support these demands. It generally refers to a broadband connection with sufficient download and upload capacity. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) raised its benchmark for fixed broadband on March 14, 2024. The benchmark calls for download speeds of 100 Mbps and upload speeds of 20 Mbps. A single video call often needs much less speed.1

Sufficient upload and download speeds can help support clear video and smooth screen sharing, while low latency and a stable connection help reduce lag, freezing, and dropped audio.

Bandwidth for simultaneous activity

Video calls and other online activities share your bandwidth. Your connection needs enough speed to handle them at the same time.

The table below lists practical minimums and preferred speeds for common video-conferencing activities.

These figures are approximate planning targets.2

Aim for more than the minimum speed. This gives your connection room for more people, shared content, and other internet use at home. That extra speed can help your calls stay stable as network demand changes.

Why internet speed matters for video conferencing

Your video call sends camera, microphone, and screen-sharing data while receiving content from other participants. Many home internet plans provide faster downloads than uploads. This may work well for streaming but can limit video-call performance when upload capacity is insufficient.

Upload capacity and call performance

Low upload speed may freeze your video or break up your audio for other people. This can happen even when their video looks normal to you. Higher video resolutions and frame rates generally increase bandwidth use. Audio settings and the conferencing platform’s compression methods also affect data use.

Latency, jitter, and packet loss

Speed isn’t the only factor affecting your performance:

Latency is the time your data takes to reach its destination. High latency causes pauses and may make you talk over other participants.

Jitter is variation in your latency. Excessive jitter can make your audio sound choppy and your video stutter.

Packet loss occurs when your data doesn’t reach its destination. You may experience dropped words, distorted sound, and frozen images.

Turning off HD video can reduce your bandwidth demand when your connection becomes unstable. Disabling incoming video or switching to audio only can reduce it further during a temporary slowdown.

Because these problems can look alike during a meeting, measurements are the best way to distinguish them.

[Read: Understanding download speed vs. upload speed]

Testing and measuring your connection

Run a speed test before you upgrade your plan or buy new equipment. If possible, test with Ethernet first. This gives you a starting point that isn’t affected by Wi-Fi range, walls, or interference.

Measurements to record

Record these measurements during each test:

Your upload speed

Your download speed

Your latency, often displayed as ping or ping time

Your jitter, if reported

Your packet loss, if reported

Whether you used Ethernet or Wi-Fi

Your test location and time of day

Repeat your test under conditions that reflect how you normally use your connection:

Over Wi-Fi from your usual workspace

During your typical meeting hours

While other household members use your network normally

After pausing streaming, downloads, and cloud backups

Near your router and farther away from it

Compare the results to find patterns. Your connection may change based on the time, location, connection type, or internet use in your home.

A recurring difference between Ethernet and Wi-Fi results may point to a wireless coverage or interference problem. If repeated Ethernet and Wi-Fi tests both show poor performance, investigate your service tier, modem or gateway, test device, and provider connection.

Don’t rely on one unusually high or low result. Run several tests over multiple days and compare recurring patterns with the recommended bandwidth ranges. If your connection barely meets a minimum, it may become unstable when network activity increases.

Once you identify a recurring pattern, you can focus your troubleshooting on the most likely cause.

Troubleshooting and network optimization

You can correct many video-call problems without replacing equipment or purchasing a faster internet plan. Begin with simple changes before moving to advanced adjustments.

Basic troubleshooting steps

Try these basic troubleshooting steps first:

Use Ethernet for important calls.

Move closer to your Wi-Fi router or gateway.

Turn off HD video if your meeting becomes unstable.

Close applications and browser tabs you don’t need.

Disable virtual backgrounds on older computers.

Restart your modem, router, and computer.

Test after making one change at a time.

If these changes don’t help, consider these network adjustments:

Select a less congested Wi-Fi channel if your router supports manual channel selection.

Enable Quality of Service (QoS) controls, if available, to prioritize your work device or real-time traffic.

Replace damaged or outdated Ethernet cables.

Check whether an older router is limiting your available speed.

Router settings such as channel selection and QoS can help manage available bandwidth, but they can’t increase the speed included with your internet plan.

If your wired tests repeatedly fall below your plan’s expected performance, document the dates and results before contacting technical support or your internet provider.

If these fixes help only temporarily, the physical network setup deserves a closer look.

Home network setup for reliable video calls

Your connection type, competing devices, router placement, and workspace conditions can all affect performance.

Router and mesh Wi-Fi placement and network usage

Use these practices to create a more dependable video-conferencing setup:

Position your workspace near your router when using Wi-Fi.

If your router allows manual band selection, use the 5 GHz band near your router and the 2.4 GHz band when you need greater range.

Place your router in a central, elevated, open location away from large appliances and other interference sources.

Pause high-resolution streaming, gaming, cloud backups, and large downloads during your meetings.

Schedule bandwidth-intensive activities outside your typical meeting hours.

Ask other users to limit network demand during interviews, presentations, and critical calls.

Keep your computer, router, camera, and conferencing software updated.

Consider mesh Wi-Fi for a large or multistory home.

Place your mesh units where they can still receive a strong signal, not inside an existing dead zone. Each unit needs a reliable connection to your main router or another mesh unit to extend coverage effectively.

Creating a reliable workspace

A dedicated workspace can also improve consistency. Position your computer where walls, metal objects, and appliances cause minimal signal obstruction. Use automatic channel selection or choose a less congested channel if neighboring Wi-Fi networks create interference.

If your device remains in one location, a permanent Ethernet connection may be your most dependable option.

These practices can improve the consistency of your home network. The following answers can help you evaluate the remaining speed and connection tradeoffs.

Internet speed for video conferencing FAQs

These answers cover connection speed and video-call performance.

What speed do I need for video calls?

The speed you need depends on your call type and other activity sharing your connection. For a one-on-one HD call, 5 to 8 Mbps in both directions is a practical planning target.

For group meetings and regular screen sharing, consider 8 to 10 Mbps upload and 15 to 20 Mbps download. If your household has simultaneous calls or other bandwidth-intensive activity, you’ll need more total capacity.

Why does upload speed matter?

Your upload speed determines how much outgoing data your connection can transmit each second. When enabled, your camera, microphone, and shared screen continually generate outgoing data during a meeting.

Limited upload capacity may cause other participants to receive frozen video, delayed screen sharing, or broken audio. This can happen even when the incoming video on your screen remains clear.

Adequate upload capacity helps other participants see and hear you clearly.

What else affects call quality?

Bandwidth is only one part of your video-call performance. Your network consistency, wireless conditions, and computer resources can also affect your experience.

Common causes of poor call quality include:

High latency, jitter, or packet loss

A weak Wi-Fi signal

Wireless interference

Network congestion

An outdated router or device software

Excessive background applications

Limited computer memory or processor performance

Evaluating these factors can help you prevent unnecessary internet-plan upgrades.

Does faster internet always improve calls?

A faster plan can help when insufficient bandwidth is causing your problem. Test with Ethernet first. If your wired calls work well but your Wi-Fi calls don’t, focus on wireless coverage and interference instead of immediately upgrading your plan.

Upgrade your plan if repeated tests show that you don’t have enough available bandwidth to support your calls and simultaneous household activity.

Is Ethernet better than Wi-Fi?

Both connection types can support your video calls, but Ethernet usually provides a more consistent connection than Wi-Fi. It avoids the wireless interference, distance, and obstruction issues that can affect Wi-Fi.

Reliable Wi-Fi may be adequate for your routine meetings. Ethernet is preferable for interviews, presentations, webinars, and other calls where connection stability is especially important.

A reliable video call depends on more than internet speed. Upload capacity, latency, network congestion, Wi-Fi coverage, and connected devices can all affect call quality. Testing your connection during a typical workday can help identify problems and determine whether adjusting your setup or service could improve performance.

How to determine the internet speed your home needs

Other factors that affect internet performance

Practical tips for testing and planning upgrades

Internet speeds are commonly measured in megabits per second (Mbps) or gigabits per second (Gbps). When comparing Mbps vs. Gbps, the difference often depends on how your household uses the internet. One Gbps equals 1,000 Mbps and provides more capacity than lower-speed tiers for activities that use a lot of bandwidth.

How much speed your household needs depends on activities such as streaming, working, and gaming. Actual speeds may be lower due to Wi-Fi® conditions, equipment limitations, network congestion, and remote server performance.

Devices using your network at the same time share your plan’s bandwidth.

Your household’s usage during its busiest hours provides a useful guide for comparing plans.

Gigabit service delivers its clearest benefits during large downloads and heavy simultaneous use.

Your router, Wi-Fi coverage, and devices can limit performance before your internet connection does.

For many households, 300 Mbps provides enough capacity for daily activities, such as browsing, streaming, and video calls. Gigabit service becomes more useful during large downloads or when several bandwidth-heavy activities overlap. Compare speed plans to find the most suitable capacity for your household.

Mbps vs. Gbps: Speed comparison explained

Megabits per second describe the rate at which an internet connection can transfer data. Gigabits per second express the same capacity on a larger scale.

Since one Gbps equals 1,000 Mbps, a 1 Gbps connection has twice the theoretical capacity of a 500 Mbps connection. It doesn’t mean every website or app will work twice as fast because devices and remote servers can create their own limits.

Higher tiers provide more capacity for simultaneous streams, video calls, and other online activity. They can also shorten large downloads when the device and download server can sustain the higher rate.

Understanding bits and bytes

Internet plans measure speed in bits per second, while apps often report downloads in bytes per second. A byte contains eight bits. One gigabit contains 1,000 megabits under the decimal units used for internet service.¹

Capitalization distinguishes bits from bytes:

Mbps means megabits per second.

MB/s means megabytes per second.

Gbps means gigabits per second.

GB means gigabytes, units of file size or storage.

Multiply an app’s MB/s reading by eight to convert it to Mbps:

37.5 MB/s × 8 = 300 Mbps

On a 300 Mbps connection, an app downloading at 37.5 MB per second is reaching the connection’s theoretical maximum speed. Actual speeds are usually lower because of Wi-Fi conditions, device capabilities, server speeds, and the data needed to maintain the connection.

The difference between bits and bytes explains why an app’s numerical download rate appears lower than the Mbps number on your plan.

Estimating download times

Plan speed can also provide a rough estimate for large downloads. A 10 GB file has a theoretical download time of roughly four and a half minutes at 300 Mbps. At 1 Gbps, the theoretical download time is about 80 seconds.

A 100 GB game has a theoretical download time of roughly 13 minutes at 1 Gbps. The same game could take roughly 45 minutes at 300 Mbps. Network overhead and the download server may extend those times.

Check the plan disclosure to determine whether the listed rate represents a maximum or typical speed. A listed rate doesn’t guarantee that every app or device will reach that rate. Federal broadband labels provide typical download speed, upload speed, and latency alongside price and data-allowance information.²

Plan labels describe expected service performance and terms. Your household’s busiest periods show how much capacity you’re likely to use.

How to determine the internet speed your home needs

Focus on activities running at the same time rather than the total number of connected devices. An idle phone uses little bandwidth. A television streaming 4K video creates a more meaningful load. A work call or game download running alongside that stream adds to the demand.

Comparing plan speeds

Common plan speeds provide useful starting points:

300 Mbps can support browsing, video calls, and high-definition streaming across several devices.

500 Mbps gives families more capacity for remote work and simultaneous 4K streams.

600 Mbps or faster can support larger households with many active users and frequent downloads.

1 Gbps can serve homes that regularly run several high-bandwidth activities at once.

A home’s actual needs still depend on simultaneous activity and upload demand.

The plan that’s ideal for your household is one that provides enough capacity for busy periods without charging you for bandwidth that remains unused.

[Read: What is considered high speed internet?]

Accounting for peak use

Estimate the load created by activities that regularly overlap. One 4K video stream commonly uses 15 to 25 Mbps, though the exact rate varies by service and video format.³ Three such streams could use as much as 75 Mbps before accounting for work calls, downloads, or background updates.

Upload speed also deserves attention. Video meetings and cloud backups depend on it. A limited upload rate becomes more noticeable when you send large files. Some plans offer much slower uploads than downloads, while some fiber internet plans provide similar rates in both directions.

Online gaming generally consumes less bandwidth than 4K streaming. Latency and connection stability play a greater role in responsiveness, so a higher Mbps figure alone may not improve gameplay.

A household’s busiest period offers a more useful planning guide than its device count. Heavy use during those hours also reveals where gigabit service can provide the greatest benefit.

[Read: Understanding download speed vs. upload speed]

When gigabit internet makes sense

Gigabit internet provides up to 1,000 Mbps of connection capacity. It’s most useful in homes that frequently transfer large files or run several bandwidth-heavy activities at once.

Activities that benefit from added capacity

Your household is more likely to notice gigabit performance while handling:

Several 4K streams at once

Large game and operating-system downloads

Frequent cloud backups

High-resolution photo or video projects

Many active users during the same hours

These activities use more bandwidth than email or ordinary browsing. Gigabit service offers the strongest practical advantage when reducing transfer times or giving several active users more room to share the connection.

Comparing practical time savings

Large transfers make the speed difference easy to see. Gigabit service can significantly shorten large downloads when the server and equipment support the full rate. Real transfers take longer when another part of the connection can’t sustain the full rate.

Web browsing tells a different story. A gigabit plan won’t necessarily load webpages three times faster than a 300 Mbps plan. Most pages require relatively little bandwidth, and their loading times also depend on the website and your device.

Fiber service can provide fast upload rates and low latency, though plan designs vary. The broadband label offers a consistent place to compare those measurements before choosing service.²

Many homes can perform well on an available 300 Mbps plan. Gigabit service may justify its higher cost when regular use includes large transfers or several overlapping high-bandwidth activities.

A speed label still tells only part of the story because equipment and Wi-Fi shape the performance that reaches each device.

Other factors that affect internet performance

Your plan provides capacity to your home. Your network equipment determines how effectively devices can use it. A faster plan may not improve performance if an older router or weak Wi-Fi signal is the bottleneck.

Equipment and Wi-Fi limitations

Gigabit service requires ports and cables capable of carrying gigabit speeds. Older computers and network equipment may have slower Ethernet ports that limit the connection.

Wi-Fi performance changes with distance from the router. Walls weaken the signal, while nearby networks and electronics can add interference. Device capabilities also set limits because older phones and computers may not support newer Wi-Fi features.

Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E equipment can provide greater wireless capacity for compatible devices. Wi-Fi 6E adds access to the 6-gigahertz (GHz) band for compatible routers and devices, which can provide access to additional wireless spectrum.⁴

Your modem, router, cables, network ports, and devices must support the intended speed.

Latency and network conditions

Download speed isn’t the only measure of performance. Latency measures the time data takes to travel between two points. Jitter describes changes in that delay, while packet loss occurs when data fails to reach its destination.⁵

Low latency, low jitter, and minimal packet loss help calls and online games remain responsive. Live video also benefits from a stable connection. These measurements can affect your experience even when a speed test reports strong download results.

Network congestion can reduce throughput during busy periods. A remote server can also limit a transfer. A faster plan won’t fix a bottleneck caused by a website, app, or remote server.

Connection capacity sets an upper limit, but the path to each device determines the performance you experience. Comparing wired and Wi-Fi tests can help determine where the slowdown occurs.

Practical tips for testing and planning upgrades

A wired speed test measures your internet connection with fewer Wi-Fi variables. Several tests taken at different times provide a more useful picture than one result.

Running a controlled speed test

A controlled speed test can help narrow down the source of slow performance and guide your response, such as improving Wi-Fi or contacting your provider.

Use this process:

Connect a computer directly to your router through Ethernet.

Pause downloads and cloud backups. Stop streams and software updates.

Choose a nearby test server.

Test at several times during the day.

Record download speed, upload speed, and latency.

Compare the wired results with wireless tests.

If wired results remain far below the plan’s expected range, confirm that your equipment supports the plan speed before contacting your provider. Strong wired results paired with consistently poor Wi-Fi results generally point to a home network issue.

Consistent test results give you evidence for deciding where an upgrade can make a difference.

Improving your home network

Your home network can limit performance even when your plan provides enough speed. Review the network before choosing a more expensive tier:

Place the router in an open, central location.

Keep the router away from dense walls, large metal objects, and electronics that may cause interference.

Install current router firmware and device updates.

Use 5 GHz or 6 GHz Wi-Fi with nearby compatible devices.

Connect stationary devices through Ethernet where practical.

Consider mesh Wi-Fi for a large home or persistent dead zones.

Confirm that your router and primary devices support the intended speed.

These changes can improve coverage and consistency without adding more internet capacity.

Testing first helps separate a plan limitation from a home-network problem. That distinction helps you spend money on the part of the connection that’s holding back performance.

FAQs about Mbps vs. Gbps

What’s the difference between Mbps and Gbps?

Mbps means megabits per second, while Gbps means gigabits per second. One Gbps equals 1,000 Mbps, so Gbps is typically used to express higher internet-speed tiers.

Which is faster, 500 Mbps or 1 Gbps?

A 1 Gbps connection is faster. It provides twice the theoretical capacity of a 500 Mbps connection, although equipment, Wi-Fi, and remote services can limit the speed a device receives.

Why does a download show MB/s when my plan uses Mbps?

Many apps display megabytes per second instead of megabits per second. Multiply MB/s by eight to estimate Mbps. A rate of 37.5 MB/s equals roughly 300 Mbps.

Do you need gigabit internet for 4K streaming?

One 4K stream doesn’t require gigabit service. Gigabit becomes more useful with several simultaneous streams, frequent large downloads, cloud backups, and many active users.

Is 300 Mbps enough for a household?

A 300 Mbps plan can support several simultaneous activities, including browsing, video meetings, streaming, and gaming. A faster plan may be useful when multiple people regularly perform bandwidth-heavy activities at the same time.

Why is a speed test lower than the plan rate?

Wi-Fi conditions, device limits, network traffic, background activity, and the test server can reduce results. A wired test helps separate internet-service performance from wireless limitations.

The answers point to one principle: Plan speed describes shared capacity, while your equipment and usage determine the result. Your busiest hours provide the clearest basis for choosing a plan.

Choosing between Mbps and Gbps

Mbps and Gbps tell you how much data an internet connection can carry each second. One Gbps offers twice the theoretical capacity of 500 Mbps, but routine browsing and a single stream won’t always reveal that difference.

Start with the available 300 Mbps tier and review performance during your household’s busiest hours. Strong wired results paired with weak Wi-Fi point to a home-network upgrade rather than a faster plan. Consistently heavy simultaneous use or frequent large transfers can justify gigabit service.

The best choice matches your household’s real workload. Choose enough capacity for your busiest periods without paying for speed you’re unlikely to use.

To meet your household’s needs, AT&T Fiber offers speed tiers ranging from 300 Mbps to 5 GIG for a fast, reliable connection.

All fiber plans come with AT&T All-Fi®, which offers complete Wi-Fi coverage throughout your home as you stream, game, work, and browse.

Mbps vs Gbps: Understanding the differences

When troubleshooting doesn’t help: is it time for a new phone?

If you’re wondering, “Why is my phone so slow?” start by looking at the symptoms and when they began. Sudden lag may point to a recently installed app, an update, a download, a network change, or overheating. Steadily declining performance may signal low storage, background activity, battery wear, outdated software, or aging hardware.

Many slowdowns are fixable and don’t mean your phone needs replacing. Identifying whether the problem affects the entire device or only online activity can help you choose the right solution.

Low storage and excessive background activity can leave fewer resources available for updates, app launches, and everyday tasks.

A sudden slowdown may follow an update, a new app, a large download, or a cloud restoration.

Battery wear and overheating can reduce performance, even when the phone’s other hardware works properly.

Slow websites, videos, and downloads may indicate a Wi-Fi® or cellular problem rather than an issue with the phone.

Start with a few basic checks to determine whether the slowdown is temporary or requires more targeted troubleshooting.

The most common reasons your phone feels slow

Before assuming your device is too old, check for conditions you can address, such as limited free space, resource-heavy processes, temperature issues, or an unstable internet connection. How the phone behaves during basic offline tasks can help you decide where to investigate first.

Restart the phone and test its menus, settings, and offline apps. A restart closes temporary processes and gives the operating system a fresh start. If the improvement doesn’t last, a recurring problem might be responsible.

Avoid third-party cleaner or booster apps that promise instant results. Many phones manage memory and background processes automatically, while some cleaner apps consume resources, display intrusive ads, or request access to sensitive information.

Once you’ve completed these basic checks, consider whether the slowdown began after a specific change to your phone.

Suddenly slow? What likely changed

If your phone became slow suddenly, think about recent changes. An operating system update, a new app, a large download, a cloud restoration, nearly full storage, or a high temperature can cause an abrupt performance drop.

Check available storage and update your apps. If the slowdown began after you installed an app, update or remove it.

Unknown apps, unexpected pop-ups, changed settings, or unexplained data use may warrant a security review. Use built-in security features or a mobile security app. Also, be sure to download software only from trusted app stores.

If you can’t connect the slowdown to a recent change, determine whether it affects the device itself or only activities requiring an internet connection.

Slow internet vs. a slow phone

Slow websites, videos, and downloads don’t always mean the device itself is lagging. Open settings, switch between apps, and use a feature that doesn’t need internet access. If those actions respond normally, Wi-Fi or cellular service may be responsible.

If you’re asking, “Why is my internet so slow on my phone?” test several apps and websites. If only one app or website is slow, that service may be the problem.

If Wi-Fi is slow, move closer to the router and test another device on the network. Distance, walls, interference, congestion, and aging equipment can affect performance.

For slow cellular service, check the signal and test another location. Coverage, congestion, outages, account settings, and plan limits may affect speed. Several speed tests at different times provide more context than one result.

When offline features also lag, the problem is more likely to involve the device, and available storage is a practical place to look next.

[Read: What is considered high speed internet?]

Storage clutter is the #1 fixable cause

Phones need available storage for updates, temporary files, and routine app functions. When space runs low, apps may open slowly, updates may fail, and everyday tasks may take longer. Storage buildup is among the most common fixable performance problems.¹

Open the storage settings to see what uses the most space. Consider removing:

Unused apps

Duplicate photos and videos

Downloaded movies, music, and podcasts

Offline maps and saved media

Old message attachments

Move important files to a computer or trusted personal cloud before deleting them. Review and empty recently deleted folders after confirming that you no longer need their contents.

On supported devices, clearing an app’s cache generally removes temporary files. Clearing its storage or data can erase saved information, reset the app, or sign you out. Options and terminology vary by device and operating system.

If your phone has sufficient free space but still responds slowly, review which apps are consuming resources in the background.

Too many apps running in the background

Apps may refresh content, track location, upload files, or check notifications while you do something else. Those processes can consume battery power, data, memory, and processor capacity.

You don’t need to force-close every app. Repeatedly closing and reopening apps makes the phone reload them. Focus instead on apps showing unusual battery use, background activity, or data consumption.

On your phone, open Settings, then select Battery or Battery usage to review activity and battery use by app. On some models, you can also check location permissions. Some models also display active apps, memory use, and background restrictions.

Update, restrict, or remove an app that repeatedly freezes, overheats the phone, or consumes excessive resources. Keep background access enabled when an app needs it for features you use.

If app activity appears normal, pending operating-system or app updates may provide a clue to the cause of slow performance.

Outdated software and app updates

Updates can correct bugs, address security risks, and improve compatibility. Check the phone’s software settings and app store for available updates. Back up important data, connect the device to power, and verify that enough storage is available before installing a major update.

If your phone is slow after an update, allow time for setup to finish. It may be indexing files, optimizing apps, restoring cloud data, or processing photos. That work can temporarily cause lag, warmth, and faster battery drain.

Restart the phone if the problem continues, then update individual apps. Reinstalling a troublesome app may help, but back up its data first.

When current software and apps don’t resolve persistent lag—especially when it occurs alongside heat, shutdowns, or short runtime—check the battery’s condition.

Battery health and overheating

Lithium-ion batteries lose capacity as they chemically age. Time, charging cycles, heat, and everyday use affect that process.

A worn battery primarily causes shorter runtime, but it may also struggle to provide peak power. Some phones manage performance under certain conditions to prevent unexpected shutdowns.²

Heat can also reduce speed. A phone may temporarily limit processing, brightness, charging, or camera functions as its temperature rises. Gaming, navigation, video recording, direct sunlight, and charging during demanding tasks can generate heat. Move a warm phone out of sunlight and pause intensive tasks.

Stop using the phone if its battery swells, smells unusual, becomes dangerously hot, or pushes against the screen or case. Turn it off if you can do so safely. Don’t charge the battery if you suspect it’s damaged or malfunctioning. Contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider immediately.

Battery replacement may restore reliability when the rest of the phone remains functional and secure. If troubleshooting and battery service don’t help, compare the cost of further repairs with the cost of replacing the phone.

When troubleshooting doesn’t help: is it time for a new phone?

Cleanup can’t overcome every hardware limitation. Older processors may struggle with current apps, damaged parts may become unreliable, and unsupported operating systems may stop receiving security updates.

Consider repair or replacement if the phone:

Remains slow after restarts, cleanup, and updates

Shuts down or overheats during ordinary use

No longer receives security updates

Can’t run apps or accessibility features you need

Requires a repair that approaches the cost of replacing the phone

Consider the repair estimate, the phone’s value, its remaining software support, and how long you expect to keep it. Review our article “When should I get a new phone?” for a broader replacement checklist.
